Ek Balam means Black Jaguar Mayan. Rare and original stucco sculptures are protected by modern thatched roofs on the structures. Many of these remnants no longer remain on other sites because of their exposure to the elements over many years. However, as Chichen Itza became a more powerful civilization, the Maya themselves buried Ek Balam, unknowingly preserving the stucco sculptures and many painted hieroglyphic inscriptions for future generations to enjoy. This gives us an idea of what many other Maya sites must once have looked like.
There is a small visitors’ center at the site that charges for entry and has restrooms. This site is becoming more popular with tourists, but is still generally quiet.
